Track 12 · Predators · lesson 5

Every one of the following is engineered to stop you sleeping on it:
The allocation closes Friday. · There are four places left. · This price is for today only. · The group is full after this intake. · I can hold it for you until the end of the call. · The last round doubled and I could not get everyone in.
They are doing one job. Not creating desire — creating a reason that the decision cannot happen tomorrow.
Almost every proposition of this kind is defeated by twenty-four hours of ordinary distance from the person presenting it.
Not by research, not by expertise, and not by argument. By the mundane fact that the arguments are much less compelling in a quiet room, that you will mention it to somebody, and that the physical presence of a persuasive person is a large part of what was doing the work.
The operator knows this considerably better than you do, because they have watched it happen to many people. Urgency is not a sales flourish added at the end. It is the load-bearing element, and everything before it is preparation.
Naming a tactic usually reduces its power. This one is unusual: knowing that a deadline is manufactured does surprisingly little, and the reason is worth understanding rather than being annoyed about.
A deadline converts a decision about whether into a decision about now or never, and those are processed differently. Under a deadline, the cost of delay becomes concrete and immediate — the place is gone, the price rises — and the cost of a bad decision stays abstract and distant. That is the discount curve from the behaviour track, and the deadline is aimed directly at its steepest part.
The second effect is on which faculty is running. Time pressure reliably shifts people from deliberate reasoning to pattern-matching, and pattern-matching is where every one of the other moves has been designed to land. A pitch under a deadline is not the same pitch evaluated faster; it is a different pitch, assessed by a different part of you.
Predict
Sales training is a real profession with a real literature, and the sequence below is not a secret. It is taught, openly, because it works on ordinary products as well as on bad ones.
Establish agreement on small things first. A series of statements you assent to, so that the final assent is continuous with several previous ones rather than a new act.
Make the objection specific. "What would need to be true for you to be comfortable?" It sounds like accommodation and it converts a general reluctance into a single item, which can then be handled.
Offer a smaller version. The step down is not a concession; it is a different close. A person who has committed a small amount is now a participant, and the next conversation starts from a different place.
Attach the cost of delay to something concrete. Not "you should decide" but "the allocation closes Friday" — because a specific loss engages the asymmetry from the behaviour track and an unspecific one does not.
Make declining socially awkward. Not aggressively. By having been generous with time, by the introduction having come from someone you know, by the enthusiasm being sincere.
Not the same thing
A date after which the thing genuinely is not available, for a reason that exists independently of you.
A date attached to the offer in order to remove the interval in which you would think.
Which is which? Put each one on a side.
A limited number of places, where the limit has been the same number for two years
A closing date set by somebody who is not selling to you
An offer that becomes available again, at the same price, when you decline it
Say that you do not make decisions about money on the day you first hear about them.
Not as a judgement about the proposition, and not as a negotiating position. As a standing rule that predates the conversation and applies to everything, which is why it is a rule rather than a reaction — a decision made in advance by the version of you that had time, exactly as the behaviour track described.
Two properties make it work where knowledge does not.
It requires no expertise. You do not have to assess the mechanism, the operator or the market, which is fortunate, because under time pressure you were not going to assess any of them well.
And it is diagnostic. What happens next is more informative than anything in the pitch. A real opportunity meets a week's delay with mild disappointment. A manufactured one meets it with a reason the rule cannot apply this time, and the quality of that reason is the most useful data you will get.
